“Success is not just about hard work; it is about choosing the right method,” says Abdul Kashem, a resident of Syed Rupati village, Magura. His transition from a struggling traditional farmer to a specialized fish seed entrepreneur demonstrates how precision and technical knowledge can redefine a person’s destiny.
The Challenge: A Search for Sustainability
As the only child of his parents, Kashem inherited a small homestead, 50 decimals of farmland, and a modest shop in the local market. Despite his best efforts, the combined income from these assets was insufficient to support his wife and two children. Eventually, he had to sell his shop to meet his family’s needs. Looking for an alternative, he turned to the two small ditches beside his house to start fish farming. However, buying random fingerlings from local vendors without any scientific knowledge led to repeated failures, leaving him discouraged and financially strained.
The Breakthrough: Shifting to Scientific Seedling Management
The turning point came when Kashem attended a Field Day organized by ADI in his village. Intrigued by the organization’s approach, he sought guidance from the Fisheries Officer and underwent a specialized 2-day training program on Fish Seed Production and Nursery Management.
Following this training, his wife, Shilpi Begum, joined the Syed Rupati Mohila Somity under the ADI Amuria Branch, securing a loan of 150,000 BDT. With this capital, Kashem leased a larger 100-decimal pond and renovated his existing ditches to create a structured nursery environment. Instead of relying on guesswork, he began applying scientific methods for water quality management and feeding, with constant monitoring from the ADI technical team.
Impact: High Returns through Specialization
By shifting his focus from general fish farming to specialized fingerling production, Kashem achieved remarkable financial results in a short period.
Within just 5 to 6 months of operation, his specialized nursery produced high-quality fish seeds that generated a revenue of 440,000 BDT. This high-margin venture has not only stabilized his family’s finances but has also established him as a subject matter expert in his community. Today, Kashem is no longer just a farmer; he is a local consultant. Neighbors and fellow farmers frequently visit him to seek advice on modern aquaculture techniques, recognizing him as a pioneer in the sector.
Abdul Kashem expresses deep gratitude for the timely intervention. “I used to work the soil and water with no results, but ADI taught me how to make them productive. Today, I am not just supporting my family—I am helping my community grow by providing quality fish seeds,” he shares. His success proves that when a traditional farmer is empowered with the right knowledge and financial tools, their potential for growth is limitless.
