“The courage to embrace new breeds leads to unmatched results,” says Lakhiya Khatun from Kukna village, Magura. Her transition from a traditional homemaker to a successful commercial poultry farmer highlights how the right choice of climate-resilient breeds can rapidly transform a family’s financial landscape.
The Challenge: Managing the Growing Costs of Living
Lakhiya’s family, supported by her husband’s farming and her son’s auto-rickshaw driving, lived a modest but stable life. However, as the family grew, so did the household expenses, creating a need for a supplementary income source. As a member of the Kukna School-para Mohila Somity, Lakhiya had heard about ADI’s support for livestock projects. The turning point came when ADI’s technical team introduced the BAU Broiler—a fast-growing, climate-resilient breed-which sparked her interest in starting a modern poultry venture.
The Strategy: Adopting High-Yield, Climate-Resilient Breeds
Guided by ADI’s technical experts, Lakhiya began her journey by stocking 150 BAU Broiler chicks. ADI provided her with both technical expertise and the financial assistance needed for shed renovation and initial input costs. Unlike traditional breeds, BAU Broilers are specifically designed for rapid growth in local conditions. Through the meticulous care of Lakhiya and her family, the first batch reached an average weight of 1.1 kg in just 45 days. By selling 162 kg of poultry at 280 BDT per kg, she generated a total of 45,360 BDT, securing a net profit of 16,860 BDT in her very first cycle.
Impact: Success through Incremental Scaling
Lakhiya’s disciplined approach to farm management and biosecurity has led to a consistent and remarkable increase in her earnings through strategic scaling. Following her initial success, she expanded her operations in stages, raising 200 birds in the second batch and 250 in the third, which yielded net profits of 20,000 BDT and 24,500 BDT respectively. By her fourth cycle, she successfully managed a flock of 350 birds, earning a substantial profit of 28,500 BDT. This steady and growing stream of income has provided her family with a significant financial cushion against rising living costs, effectively transforming her small backyard initiative into a robust commercial enterprise with long-term economic security. Lakhiya Khatun is now a vocal advocate for biosecurity and modern livestock management in her community. She believes that success in poultry is a direct result of following expert advice and maintaining a scientific rearing environment. “Success doesn’t just happen; it is built by embracing the right technology and ensuring the safety of your flock. Today, I am proud to be a major contributor to my family’s prosperity,” she remarks with a sense of pride.
