Promoting safe water, sanitation, and hygiene for healthier communities

Expanding access to safe drinking water, hygienic latrines, and healthy behaviors through community engagement, infrastructure development, and behavioral change initiatives.

ADI implements comprehensive water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives to improve health, wellbeing, and resilience in underserved communities. Through community awareness campaigns, behavioral change communication, and the development of safe water infrastructure and hygienic latrines, the program ensures access to essential services and promotes sustainable hygiene practices. By engaging local entrepreneurs and households, providing training, and fostering community participation, the initiative strengthens ownership, encourages healthy behaviors, and reduces the risk of waterborne diseases, contributing to long-term public health and human capital development.

The Bangladesh Rural Water and Sanitation for Human Capital Development Project, supported by the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) since June 2022, aims to ensure safe drinking water, expand access to hygienic sanitation facilities, and promote healthy behaviors through sustained behavioral change. The Alternative Development Initiative (ADI) is implementing the project as Coordinating Partner Organization–1 (CPO-1) across 14 branches in 7 upazilas of Cumilla district. To strengthen local service delivery and sustainability, ADI has trained 8 Local Entrepreneurs (LEs), including 1 water LE, 7 sanitation LEs, and 1 female entrepreneur specializing in sanitary napkins, through a two-day intensive training program.

With financial and technical support from PKSF, ADI’s implementation of the Bangladesh Rural Water and Sanitation for Human Capital Development Project is contributing to sustainable improvements in water access, sanitation coverage, hygiene practices, and overall human capital development in Cumilla district.

1. Behavioral Change Communication (BCC) Campaign

The project has successfully engaged trained field workers and community committee members from relevant ADI branches in Behavioral Change Communication (BCC) sessions. These sessions promote:

  • Safely managed drinking water
  • Safely managed sanitation
  • Handwashing with soap
  • Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM)
  • Improved Baby WASH practices

As a result, communities have demonstrated increased awareness and positive behavior change, leading to improved water infrastructure development and greater demand for hygienic latrine construction, contributing to better public health and hygiene outcomes.

2. Development of Water Infrastructure

To ensure reliable access to safe drinking water and reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases, the project supports the development of improved water infrastructure alongside community awareness on safe water use and management.

3. Construction of Hygienic Latrines

Under the project, loans are provided to support the construction of health-compliant, hygienic latrines in line with approved designs. Four types of latrines are promoted:

  • Shulobh
  • Bilash
  • Shobhon
  • Shoukhin

The installation of twin-pit hygienic latrines has significantly reduced environmental, air, and water pollution, contributing to improved sanitation and public health outcomes.
