“Agriculture is not just a profession; it’s a science of possibilities,” says Badhon Shikder, a young visionary from Barunatail village, Magura. A graduate with a passion for the land, Badhon chose to leave the traditional job market to pioneer modern agricultural practices, proving that innovation can turn farming into a highly profitable enterprise.
The Challenge: Bridging the Gap Between Passion and Expertise
In 2021, Badhon leased 50 decimals of land to start his journey. However, he soon faced the twin hurdles of limited capital and a lack of specialized technical knowledge. While he had the drive to succeed, he struggled to scale his operations. Seeing her son’s determination, his mother, Shamima—a dedicated member of the Shikder-para Mohila Somity under ADI—approached the organization’s agricultural officers to find a sustainable solution.
The Strategy: Adopting Modern Seedling Technology
The turning point came when ADI provided Badhon with intensive training on Cocopeat-based seedling production. Armed with new skills, he constructed a specialized Poly House on 8 decimals of land with ADI’s financial and technical backing.
Initially, Badhon imported ready-made cocopeat from Noakhali, which resulted in high production costs. To optimize his business, he began producing his own cocopeat from raw coco-dust. This strategic shift significantly reduced overhead costs and boosted his profit margins. In his first cycle alone, he produced nearly 80,000 high-quality vegetable seedlings, earning a net profit of 70,000 BDT.
Impact: Building a Commercial Agri-Hub
Badhon’s success has now evolved into a full-scale commercial venture. He has opened a specialized retail outlet in the Dhaka Road area of Magura, where he sells:
Wholesale & Retail Seeds: Improved varieties of vegetable seeds.
Modern Agri-Inputs: Cocopeat, specialized plastic trays, and nursery equipment.
Grafted Seedlings: Recently, after completing a 3-day training on Grafting Techniques, he has begun producing summer tomato seedlings, a high-demand crop in the region.
A Model for the Youth Today, Badhon is more than just a businessman; he is a mentor. He actively educates local farmers on modern cultivation methods and inspires unemployed youth to view agriculture as a prestigious career. Badhon is now a beacon of hope for the local youth, proving that modern agriculture is a prestigious career path. He emphasizes that innovation is the only way forward,
